Shadow Fiend is easily gankable because he lacks any means of movement or escape. To catch any possible gankers moving to the mid lane, make sure there are wards.
Early in the game, Shadow Fiend must be able to survive.

Shadow Fiend’s Ability
SHADOWRAZE
Directly in front of him, the Shadow Fiend razes the ground, harming nearby opponent units. Stacking damage amplifier is added to the target, dealing additional Shadowraze damage to the adversary with each additional layer. The speed of movement likewise reduces with each additional stack.
NECROMASTERY
When a unit is killed, the Shadow Fiend snatches its soul, dealing extra damage. He frees 30.0% of them from servitude at death.
PRESENCE OF THE DARK LORD
The presence of a Shadow Fiend lowers the armor of adjacent opponents. For an additional 20.0 seconds, every enemy hero slain nearby increases armor reduction by 2.0.
REQUIEM OF SOULS
The captured souls of Shadow Fiend are collected before being released as demonic energy lines. When the souls are freed, units close to Shadow Fiend may be injured by a number of energy lines. Any unit that is harmed by Requiem of Souls will be dreaded and have its magic resistance and movement speed decreased for 0.7 seconds for each line struck up to a maximum of 2.1. For each soul that Necromastery successfully captures, lines of energy are formed.
Regardless of its cooldown, Requiem of Souls is always cast when a Shadow Fiend dies.
