Background
The primary player in toppling the Goryeo Dynasty was Taejo of Joseon, also known as Yi Seong-Gye, who founded and ruled as the first monarch of the Joseon Dynasty in Korea. In the late 1370s and early 1380s, Yi Seong-Gye enlisted in the Goryeo army and rose to prominence and esteem by driving the Mongol relics from the peninsula and defeating well-trained Japanese pirates in a string of victorious battles. In 1392–1393, he proclaimed the establishment of a new dynasty in the county known as the “Kingdom of Great Joseon,” thus reviving an earlier empire also known as Joseon that was supposedly founded around three thousand years earlier. Amidst his son’s conflict in 1308, Yi Seong-Gye abdicated in 1308 and passed away on May 23, 1408 at Changdeok Palace.
