Background
Often considered as one of the finest generals and military strategists of all time, Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus was a Roman general who subsequently served as a consul. His greatest accomplishments came during the Second Punic War, when he is most remembered for his victory over Hannibal Barca in the decisive battle of Zama in 202 BC, which gained him the title of agnomen Africanus. Despite being viewed as a hero by the majority of Romans, mainly because of his actions during the conflict with the Carthainians, Scipio was despised by other patricians of the day. He faced false accusations of treason and bribery in his final years, which were intended merely to damage his reputation in the eyes of the public. After becoming disillusioned with his peers’ lack of thanks, Scipio retreated from public life and fled Rome.
