Background
King Richard I ruled England from July 6, 1189, until his demise. Richard the Lionheart was his nickname due to his legendary status as a valiant warrior and military leader. During the Third Crusade, Richard was a key Christian leader who took over the campaign following Philip II of France’s departure. Richard also achieved significant wins against Saladin, the Muslim leader. Richard has been viewed as preferring to utilize his kingdom just as a source of wealth to sustain his soldiers, rather than seeing it as a responsibility needing his presence as ruler. Nonetheless, his subjects revered him as a holy hero. He is still regarded as one of the few English monarchs who is known by his nickname rather than his regnal number. He is also a timeless and recognizable character in both France and England.
