Background
The founder of the dynasty that created and oversaw the Ottoman Empire was Osman Gazi, usually referred to as Osman I. He was the leader of the Ottoman Turks. At the age of 23, Osman assumed the role of Kayi Clan head following the passing of his father in 1281. After a short while, mercenaries from all across the Islamic world started pouring into his domain to battle the Orthodox Empire. After decisively defeating a sizable Byzantine army in 1301, Osman started applying pressure to Byzantine-controlled regions. The Byzantines were startled by this and swiftly left the Anatolian region. The rulers of Byzantium were adamant about stopping Osman from entering Europe and made an effort to restrain his westward advance. But Osman persisted, and he eventually took control of the Byzantine city of Ephesus. This resulted in yet another enormous and varied flood of travelers, warriors, and migrants entering Ottoman lands. Osman was a capable administrator as well as a competent leader. With his policy of collaboration and tolerance toward Greek Christians, he increased the size of his domain. Osman’s leadership offered order, stability, and security to the Greeks, who were eager to have it as the central administration in Constantinople was gradually becoming disorganized. Greeks and Turks started getting married and starting families without hindrance from the government, and eventually a lot of Christians converted to Islam. For the next 600 years, religious tolerance served as the Ottoman Empire’s defining feature.
