Background
Held in high regard by the Greek city-state of Sparta, Leonidas I was the 17th member of the Agiad line, a dynasty descended from the fabled heroes Heracles and Cadmus. Gorgo, the daughter of Cleomenes I of Sparta, was married to him. During the Second Persian War, Leonidas made a significant contribution to the Greek forces by leading them to a last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae (480 BC) in an effort to protect the pass from the Persian army on the invading side. He is most known for leading the 300 Spartans.
