Background
General Hannibal Barca of Carthage is regarded as one of the finest military strategists in history. During the First Punic War, his father, Hamilcar Barca, was the foremost Carthaginian commander. Hasdrubal the Fair was his brother-in-law, and his younger brothers were Mago and Hasdrubal. In the western Mediterranean Basin, Hannibal lived during a time of intense conflict as the Roman Republic established its dominance over powerful nations like ancient Carthage, the Etruscans, the Samnites, and the Greek monarch of Syracuse. His historic march across the Pyrenees and the Alps into Italy with an army that included war elephants from Iberia marked the start of the Second Punic War. He defeated numerous Rome allies in his first few years in Italy with three spectacular victories—the Trebia, Lake Trasimene, and Cannae—where he stood out for his ability to assess his own and his opponents’ strengths and weaknesses and tailor his strategy appropriately. For fifteen years, Hannibal controlled most of Italy, yet he was unable to advance on Rome. He was driven back to Carthage by an enemy counter-invasion of North Africa, where he was soundly defeated in the Battle of Zama by Scipionio Africanus.
