Background
Born in the middle of the sixth century, Eulji Mundeok passed away sometime after 618. Eulji Mundeok, one of the most illustrious military commanders of the Goguryeo era, was instrumental in driving out the Sui invasion thanks to his strategic foresight and leadership. He devised a plan in the face of forces that were numerically superior, which enabled him to win by a wide margin. His outstanding tactical achievement secured him a place among Korea’s most illustrious leaders for all time. The author of the Samguk Sagi, Kim Bu-sik, also credited Eulji Mundeok with the victory over Sui. Eulji Mundeok is regarded as one of the most significant individuals in Korean history today.
