Background
The final reigning monarch of the Ptolemaic Kingdom of Egypt was Cleopatra VII Philopator, who was ostensibly succeeded as pharaoh by her son Caesarion. She also wrote about medicine, was a polyglot, a naval commander, and a diplomat. She was descended from Ptolemy I Soter, a Macedonian Greek general and Alexander the Great’s friend, who founded the Ptolemaic dynasty. The Hellenistic era, which had existed since Alexander the Great’s reign, came to an end when Cleoptra died and Egypt was become a province of the Roman Empire. She was the first Ptolemaic ruler to study Egyptian, yet her native tongue was Koine Greek.
