Mengde, also known as Cao Cao, was a Chinese warlord who served as the Eastern Han dynasty’s penultimate chancellor. He was a key player in the Three Kingdoms era, helping to establish the kingdom of Cao Wei. He was given the title “Emperor Wu of Wei” after his death. Though he has also been hailed as a superb military tactician and ruler who treated his subjects like family, he is frequently depicted in later literature as a cruel and ruthless tyrant. As the Haan chancellor, Cao Cao was quite successful, but his treatment of the Han emperor Liu Xie drew harsh criticism, which led to a civil war that dragged on and eventually got worse.
