Background
Šárka first arose in the Maidens’ War, a classic Bohemian folktale.
The Czech queen Libuše put together a royal gyard made up of only young women in the ninth century AD. Vlasta was the captain of the guard, a famous female warrior from the Czech Republic. Following Libuše’s passing, Vlasta organized a group of women known as “The Maidens” to rebel against her husband’s patriarchal forces. Vlasta’s deputy commander was Šárka.
