Background
Among the most well-known Muslim heroes of all time, Saladin was the first Muslim sultan of Egypt, Syria, Yemen, Palestine, and the Ayyūbid dynasty. During the Third Crusade, Saladin engaged in combat with several Christian Crusaders, most notably Richard I the Lionheart. After the Franks had held the holy city for almost nine decades, Saladin’s army of the Kingdom of Jerusalem suffered a severe loss in 1187.
