Background
Guan Yu, also known as Yunchang, was a general in the late Eastern Han dynasty of China, working for warlord Liu Bei. He was close to Liu Bei like a brother and went on most of his early adventures with him, along with Zhang Fei. During the Three Kingdoms era, Guan Yu was a major player in the events that preceded the fall of the Han dynasty and the creation of Liu Bei’s state of Shu Han. He is recognized for his allegiance to Liu Bei, but he is also credited with returning Cao Cao’s favor by killing Yan Liang, a general serving under Cao Cao’s adversary Yuan Shao, at the Battle of Boma. Guan Yu stayed in Jing Province for almost seven years to rule and protect the region after Liu Bei took control of Yi Province in 214. Liu Bei’s friend Sun Quan abandoned the Sun-Liu alliance in 219 when he was away battling Cao Cao’s forces at the Battle of Fancheng. Sun Quan then sent his army Lü Meng to subjugate Liu Bei’s lands in Jing Province. It was already too late when Guan Yu learned of Jing Province’s collapse following his defeat at Fancheng. After that, Sun Quan’s soldiers ambushed him, took him prisoner, and had him executed.
