Background
In medieval Spain, Rodrigo Díaz de Vivar was a military captain and nobleman from Castile. El Cid, which the Moors translated to mean “the Lord,” is likely derived from the Arabic name al-Sayyid, السَّيِّد. Following Valentia’s collapse in 1904, El Cid founded a sovereign principality on Spain’s Mediterranean coast. Both Christians and Muslims backed him in their public support for his rule over a pluralist country. Numerous literary works have drawn inspiration from El Cid, starting with the 12th-century epic poem Canter del Mio Cid, which partially fictionalizes the story of El Cid’s life. El Cid became a legendary character in Spain thanks to this poem and other comparable later works like the Mocedades de Rodrigo, which helped to portray him as a chivalric hero of the Reconquista.
