Background
After her father passed away, Constance’s legitimate heiress to the Norman thrones of Sicily was not acknowledged by the nobility right away. After her marriage to Holy Roman Emperor Henry VI in 1186, she assumed the title of Queen of Sicily. However, rebellions in Catania and southern Sicily were sparked by Henry’s tyrannical authority over the realm. Constance took over as ruler in Henry’s attempt to appease the rebels, but the Sicilians saw little value in the move. Furious with Henry for abandoning her and mistreating her people, Constance took part in the rebellion herself. Henry was eventually obliged to sign a peace after the rebels besieged him. Henry abruptly passed away in 1197 while on a trip to Sicily; other accounts claim that Constance was the cause of his poisoning. The next year, Constance severed the links her late husband had forged between Sicily and the Holy Roman Empire by arranging for her baby son Frederick II to be anointed King of Sicily with herself serving as Queen Regent. Constance, who was still the Empress Dowager of the Holy Roman Empire, was happy enough to watch her son take the throne alone in Sicily; she had no ambition to rule over the Germans. Constance did not live to see her son’s tremendous accomplishments because she passed away unexpectedly that November. Constance made sure her son’s inheritance was safe by appointing Pope Innocent III as Frederick’s guardian and creating the Council of Regency for Sicily in her will.
