Background
In AD 60 or 61, Boudica, a queen of the British Celtic Iceni tribe, staged an insurrection against the Roman Empire’s colonial armies. But Boudica was ultimately vanquished by Roman governor Gaius Suetonius Paulinus, confirming Roman rule over the province. Then, Boudica either committed suicide to elude detection or passed away from disease. Boudica’s fame in the Victorian age resulted from the revival of interest in these events during the English Renaissance. The Boudica continues to be a significant cultural emblem in the United Kingdom. Because there was no indigenous British literature produced in the first millennium, the only source of information on Boudica’s uprising is Roman literature.
