Background
The Kingdom of Asturias was established by the Visigothic prince Pelagius, who ruled it from 718 until his passing in 737. He is recognized for having started the Reconquista—the Christian reconquest of the Iberian peninsula from the Moors—through his victory at the Battle of Covadonga. In defiance of Moorish control, he founded a sovereign Christian state. Two Latin chronicles from the kingdom Pelagius built, published in the late ninth century, serve as the main sources for information about his life and career. The first is the Chronica Albeldensia, which was composed in Albelda somewhere in the year 881. The second is the Chronicle of Alfonso III, which underwent revisions early in the century.
